Zoo seeks donations
to support animals

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Fundación Pro-Zoológicos de Costa Rica, FUNDAZOO, is developing a donation campaign focused on continuing their efforts to maintain and help animals, both in the
Simón Bolivar Zoo and the biological park Santa Ana Conservation Center.

According to the foundation, due to the closure of the biological parks and the zoo ordered by the government to try to control the covid-19 pandemic, the budget for animal care has been reduced.

The foundation's resources are obtained mainly through the sale of the tickets since the zoos and the biological parks are closed, the budget for animal feed and health is almost nothing.

"Our staff continues to work to feed the animals, clean their enclosures and provide necessary medical attention, as they are doing with the plants that make up our Botanical Garden and the Forest Species Nursery," said the foundation in its statement.

In addition to the Simón Bolivar Zoo located in downtown San José, the foundation is in charge of maintaining the Santa Ana Conservation Center.

Donations are received in the account of the Banco Nacional, IBAN number: CR67015108010010021802, in the name of FUNDAZOO.

Foundation representatives clarify that they are not calling on people to request donations on their behalf. Whoever wants to help can deposit in any Banco Nacional branch.

Due to the recent changes in the restrictions to visit zoos and biological parks, ordered by the Ministry of Health, these places can begin to receive some visitors.

People who cannot donate, but if they want to visit the zoo or the botanical garden, they must arrange an appointment by phone 2223-1790.

The history of the national zoo and Botanical Garden began in 1884 when the National Museum of Costa Rica, led by Anastasio Alfaro, established a small zoological garden in the first museum facilities that were located at the antique University of Santo Tomás.

It was not until 1921 that the park was opened to the public as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Costa Rica's independence.

The Zoo and Botanical Garden have been managed by FUNDAZOO since 1994.

The zoo held a collection of many species of mammals, birds, reptiles, as well as a great variety of tropical vegetation.

The Santa Ana Conservation Center is dedicated to research, captive breeding of tropical flora and fauna species, environmental education, habitat conservation and animal rehabilitation. It is located in the District of Santa Ana on the west-side of San José Province.
