U.S. Company
transfers partof its operations to the country Georgia based East West company announced on Wednesday an investment of over $2 million to expand its operations in Costa Rica to a 25% increase in sales. This move was in part due to the transfer of projects from the U.S. to the country. “At the beginning of 2019, East West Manufacturing acquired General Microcircuits which involved taking advantage of the human resources, quality, talent, and production capacity as its main strategy,” said Marco Fernandez, Costa Rica East West’s general manager. “It was meant to transfer high-volume projects to our operations in Costa Rica from the different East West branches. This involves investing in plant capacity, automation, and staff to underwrite the long-term commitment to the work and investment made in the country up to this point.” According to the company, the branch located in Alajuela Province, will get an investment in new machinery to automate production lines and to introduce new production processes in the country. Currently, the company has over 180 employees and expects to hire more than 50 more people during this year. “This measure is being taken at the headquarters given the excellent results obtained in the country with special emphasis on the quality of the staff and the final product,” said East West in its statement. The company’s strategy will be to use economies of scale and to send higher volume projects to Costa Rica to provide a production alternative that is optimized for its customers. Information provided by the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE, shows that as of the 2019 close, the advanced manufacturing sector employed more than 9,630 people and recorded 44 companies in this strategic sector. “The announcement made by the East West company fills us with pride and continues to motivate us to work to position ourselves in greater competitive conditions,” said Dyalá Jiménez, minister of Foreign Trade. “Today, more than ever, this is great news because it translates into employment opportunities. We are deeply grateful to East West for its trust in our country and its long-term wager.” According to CINDE, advanced manufacturing companies have made it possible to double the number of jobs created by the sector since 2000, reaching more than 9,600 job positions in 2019. Likewise, the number of active companies in the country has grown 1.5 times over that same period of time. “With this new investment, East West Costa Rica was able to increase its manufacturing volume and generate greater value-added for its processes by taking advantage of the economies of scale to the benefit of its customers and, in turn, have a positive impact on the development of the human talent,” said CINDE in its statement. The company is hiring staff for areas such as accounting, purchasing, electromechanical techniques, industrial engineers, logistics, production operators, and supervising. In February, North Carolina- based Qorvo, a radio frequency technology company, announced its expansion of its Costa Rican operations to manufacture high-tech pieces for the telecommunications industry. Qorvo is a leading provider of technologies and RF solutions for mobile phones, infrastructure and aerospace industry applications. Company branch is currently located in the Metropolitan Free Zone in Heredia Province. “We are very excited about the expansion and modernization plans by acquiring advanced microelectronics assembly lines,” said Gerardo Chaves, general manager of Qorvo Costa Rica. “We can ensure a stable operation that generates sources of quality employment for many Costa Ricans thanks to different factors. For example, the availability of qualified personnel, the capacity, and experience developed over 20 years of continuous work in Costa Rica, and the support we have received from institutions such as CINDE, Comex, and Procomer.” The company has invested $90 million since first operating in Costa Rica in 1996. Once again, the company has committed to expanding its business in the country because of its qualified talent, strategic location, and robust commercial platform, said CINDE in its statement. “Qorvo’s new expansion is a strategic investment for the country. It will promote the manufacturing of high-tech telecommunications segments,” said Duayner Salas, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade. “The decision also entails enormous potential to increase productive linkages, alliances with the national academic sector and, of course, occupy more sophisticated processes within the Global Value Chains. It fills us with great pride and satisfaction to confirm their trust in our country.” That capacity for innovation has also allowed almost 50 other manufacturing companies to operate competitively from Costa Rica, increasing almost twice the number of companies installed since 2000, said CINDE in its statement. According to CINDE data, the manufacturing sector represented 51% of Costa Rica’s 2018 FDI investments. The company is hiring engineers, technicians, and operators.
