U.N. donates $3,500 in appliances to border police
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Six washing machines and two freezers are the donations of the United Nations to the Ministry of Public Security.
According to the ministry, the value of the donation is $3,500. The appliances will be dispatched to the border police posts on the Nicaraguan border.
This donation is a recognition to one of the country's institutions that is working at the front lines fighting against covid-19, said Alice Harding Shackelford, UN representative.
According to the authorities, following sanitary measures is vital and these washing machines help officers keep clean, dry, and non-contaminated clothing during the winter months as they are continuously exposed to people infected with the virus.
In addition, refrigerators will keep food cold and prevent gastrointestinal problems for officials, the security ministry said in its statement.
This is the second donation to the border police in one week.

On May 12, the U.S. government through the International Organization for Migration, IOM, and the Embassy delivered a second donation of medical supplies to the Ministry of Security.
In the case of the IOM with the support of the United States Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, PRM, delivered personal protective equipment and medical supplies to support the immigration police and other police officers who are facing the emergency of the covid-19 at the borders.
The donated equipment included wheelchairs, infrared thermometers, sphygmomanometers, oximeters, stethoscopes, surgical gloves, eye protection eyeglasses and N95 masks in addition to cleaning supplies such as chlorine, disinfectant and liquid soap.
