medical supplies to Social Security By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Wednesday, the municipalities of the country received medical supplies such as masks, face shields, gel alcohol and gloves donated by the U.S. Government through the Office of Defense of the Embassy in Costa Rica. "Local governments are on the front line to keep communities safe," said Ambassador Sharon Day. "With this donation, we help keep them safe while doing their extraordinary work." She added: "Our support for the municipalities has been constant and this donation of supplies is just one more example of the strong ties that unite us." According to the embassy, the donation includes 15,650 face masks, 1,400 glove boxes of 100 pairs each, 3,495 pairs of protective glasses, 3,000 500-ml gel alcohol bottles, and 77 gallons of gel alcohol. This donation valued at $48,000, is in addition to the more than $235,000 that the U.S. Embassy has donated to Costa Rican public institutions since the beginning of the pandemic shut down. This is the most recent of many donations that Costa Rica has received from the U.S. On June, the U.S. Government donated $41,000-plus in laboratory supplies to support the research being done by scientists in Costa Rica in developing human anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulins. In the first week of June, the U.S. Government through the USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, OFDA, donated 1,200 reusable face shields. On May, through the International Organization for Migration, IOM, the U.S. Embassy donated personal protective equipment and medical supplies to support the immigration police and other police officers who are facing the covid-19 emergency at the borders. ![]() Also yesterday was announced the South Korean government, through its embassy, donated 300,000 KF-94 masks to Social Security. The medical supplies, which entered the Juan Santamaría International Airport by plane, were transferred to the Social Security Storage and Distribution Center located in the Curridabat District, in San José Province. "This is a generous donation that is of great importance because this equipment will be for the direct use of our workers who are on the front line of patient care and is a team of high demand throughout the world," said Román Macaya-Hayes, president of Social Security. According to Social Security, these masks do not allow the passage of more than 5% of particles present in the air, so they can be homologated to N-95 masks, the U.S. standard. For his part, Chan-sik Yoon, ambassador of South Korea, said that "Costa Rica and Korea are impeccable allies, two countries that protect fundamental values." According to Ambassador Yoon, South Korean experts have also supported Costa Rica by joining Social Security specialists during the pandemic by videoconferencing and sharing information. More donations from friendly countries, among these are: On May, the Government of Canada through the Embassy donated $215,123 to medical workers for the purchase of medical supplies. In the same month, six washing machines and two freezers were donated by the United Nations to the Ministry of Public Security. The value of the donation was $3,500. On May and April, the Social Security received shipments in three hired charter flights, of the medical supplies donated by China. ------------------------ What countries could donate medical supplies to Costa Rica?
