Published Monday, June 15, 2020 The Arab Emirates donates $1 million in medical supplies By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Friday, a flight by Etihad Airways arrived at Juan Santamaría International airport, in Alajuela Province, with a load of supplies and medical equipment valued at $1 million, donated by the Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, announced Social Security. According to the Government, as this was the first flight to arrive in Costa Rica from Abu Dhabi, it was received by President Carlos Alvarado along with other authorities. "Costa Rica expresses its deep appreciation for the timely and solidary cooperation by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, and the Chancellor, Sheik Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, for this show of fraternal friendship between our countries and peoples," Alvarado said. The Boeing 787-9 of Etihad Airways, the official airline of the United Arab Emirates, carried more than 8.5 tons of medical humanitarian aid, distributed on 15 loading platforms and a total of 1,200 boxes. The donation includes 25 thousand virus detection tests, gloves and masks. In addition to transporting cargo, six Costa Ricans returned on the flight. Among them were two children and two crew members who work as flight attendants for Etihad Airways. The aircraft returned to Abu Dhabi on Saturday. According to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations in 2010. The country has collectively received approximately $7.7 million in donations of medical supplies and money during the pandemic, said the government in its statement. ![]() According to the Health Ministry, as of Sunday afternoon there was an increase of 53 new cases of patients infected with covid-19, bringing the total to 951 active cases. Authorities provided the following statistics of the evolution of the virus in the country: • 43% of the 1,715 infected have fully recovered. Since the first case was detected in March, 752 coronavirus patients have fully recovered. • The ages of those infected range from a three-month-old baby to a 92-year-old, with an average age of 34. • 17 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 14 are in recovery rooms and 3 have been reported in an Intensive Care Unit, ICU, with delicate health conditions. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes. • 437 foreigners infected. That is equal to 46% of active patients. • 22,399 people have been ruled out. • 32,262 medical covid-19 tests have been made. • 12 deaths have been reported from patients infected with covid-19 since March, three women and nine men. The updated number of total patients in each district can be reached at the National Distance Education University on its Covid-19 Map.
