At the Cup of Excellence 2020 award, the first three places were won by farmers from the Tarrazú Canton, announced the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE).

Tarrazú Canton is in the northwest zone of San José Province. It is part of the Saints zone (Los Santos), famous for its coffee crops.

The Cup of Excellence auction is internationally recognized and is one of the most important events for the coffee sector since the selected lots have the opportunity to compete and obtain high prices, as well as enter new markets willing to pay for high quality, said the Institute in its statement.

This year, the first place went to Finca La Loma with a score of 90.27 for its Geisha coffee variety with honey.

The second place was for Finca El Cedro from the producer Johel Monge-Naranjo, scoring 90.14 with its Typica coffee variety with honey.

Third place went to Finca Don Cayito from the coffee producer Luis Ricardo-Calderón, with a score of 89.55 in the process of its geisha coffee.

The Cup of Excellence 2020 is organized by the Costa Rican Fine Coffee Association (SCACR) with the support of the ICAFE and other sponsors.

According to the institute, the contest began in April with several tasting phases.

For the first phase, there was a panel of national tasters and international tasters who analyzed and chose the 26 best coffees with scores above 87 points.

These international judges are recognized tasters of the most important companies in Europe, Asia and the United States, said ICAFE.

The 26 coffees that achieved scores equal to or greater than 87 points proceed to an electronic auction, to be held on August 5.

The electronic auction will be virtual and broadcasted in real-time by the Alliance for Excellence Coffee (ACE), where buyers from all over the world bid to obtain the best coffees in Costa Rica.

The ICAFE is expected to announce the website where the auction broadcast will be streamed.
