The National Children's Hospital performed the first surgery on a child infected with covid-19 last Saturday.

According to Olga Arguedas-Arguedas, director of the hospital, the baby boy is recovering satisfactorily from the surgery. “Everything went very well for the boy. The surgery team did an impeccable job on following protection guidelines,” she said.

The boy, 9, from the southern zone, continues hospitalized after his emergency surgery.

The Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday that 807 youths have been infected with the virus. Of these five have required hospitalization.

Social Security also reported seven cesarean surgeries on pregnant women infected with covid-19.

The most recent case was registered at the San Carlos hospital in Alajuela Province when the surgery was performed for the birth of a girl from a mother infected with the virus.

The 19-year-old woman, residing in the Guatuso District, was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She gave at 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday to a girl weighing 4,010 grams and measuring 52 cm. The baby’s covid-19 lab results were negative.

"Both the mother and daughter are hospitalized in excellent health conditions," said the Social Security in its statement.

Cesarean procedures for women infected with covid-19 have been performed in Mexico, San Juan de Dios, Calderón Guardia and National Women's Hospitals, said the Social Security.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the first investigations in women infected with covid-19 did not find the virus in the amniotic fluid surrounding their babies in the womb or the blood in the umbilical cord.

Once born, the newborns did not have the virus on swab tests. The researchers also found no coronavirus in women's breast milk.

"However, studies are still ongoing to determine for sure that the virus does not appear to be transmitted during pregnancy," said the CDC in its statement.

The main risk is when babies are fed by mothers with covid-19. That close contact could allow the transmission of the virus, said the CDC specialists.
