Social
Security budgets $4.6 million-plus to
charter flight to ChinaBy the A.M. Costa Rica staff Social Security announced on Tuesday the budget of $4,866,000 for the payment of a charter flight to China and also the purchase of medical supplies from companies in that country. According to Social Security, this budget will serve to cover two types of expenses. The first is the payment of the private flight of $1,150,000 to carry the donation of medical supplies made by the Chinese government. The donation valued in $830,000 is an estimated cargo of 600 cubic meters, which is equivalent to 55 tons of medical supplies such as N-95 respirators, disposable gowns, glasses, covers boots, gloves, masks, among others, said Social Security in their statement. This is the third donation of medical supplies made by the Chinese government to Social Security in less than a month. Last week the Chinese Embassy delivered the first donation of medical supplies. ![]() According to the embassy, 2,500 covid-19 test kits, known as PCRs produced by the Chinese company BGI Group were delivered as the first part of the donation of supplies to the country. These test kits are licensed by the Chinese National Administration of Medical Products and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, said the Chinese Embassy in their statement. ![]() On Friday, the Chinese Embassy announced the delivery of the second donation of medical supplies to Social Security. The donation of supplies including: 100,000 surgical masks, 10,080 medical test kits to determine if a person is infected or not with the 2019-nCov., 5 continuous positive pressure airway machines that will provide light and stable pressure of air in the airways to keep them open. According to the embassy, donations were made through the Jack Ma and Alibaba Foundations. The second part of the cost is $3,716,000 for the purchase of N-95 respirators and safety glasses from Chinese companies. According to Luis Fernando Porras, Social Security representative, the cargo is expected to take off from an international airport in Shanghai within the next few weeks, making a stop at Los Angeles International Airport. Once there the cargo will be transferred to another plane that will bring the load to the country. Social Security continues the process of choosing the Chinese companies from whom medical supplies will be purchased, Porras said. Authorities are looking to synchronize the delivery of the donation with the purchase from Chinese suppliers to make a single cargo flight. Then, the provider companies will assume part of the cost of cargo charter flight, said Social Security. "We seek to coordinate the delivery of supplies (purchased and donated) at the same time and place so the provider's companies will assume a partial payment of the cost of the charter," Porras said. This is to save transportation costs for Social Security. According to Porras, if the delivery of the donation and the merchandise purchased coincide, it will proceed in one charter flight, with an estimated arrival in the country within a week. Medical supplies that cannot be brought on the private flight will be shipping from China in 22 days, authorities said. In summary, the value of the donation is $830,000. The cost of cargo transport plus supplies purchase is $4,866,000. ------------------------ Are the authorities in your country buying medical supplies from China?
