Public
clinic investigated for allegedly not attended
covid-19 patientBy the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday that an investigation has been opened into an alleged case of negligence with a patient infected with the coronavirus covid-19. According to Minister of Health Daniel Salas, he requested the General Auditory to investigate the supposed refusal of staff from Marcial Fallas Public Clinic in Desamparados, San José Province, to carry out a covid-19 diagnostic test on a patient. The incident allegedly happened this week. It’s reported that the patient, after clinic staff denied him, had to pay a private laboratory for this medical test. "The investigation of the case will advance, regarding this process, we will not refer to it until the conclusion of the research," Salas said. "But what I do wish to emphasize is that this investigation is necessary and urgent to analyze possible weaknesses in the process and opportunities to improve. This does not diminish from the hard work and dedication of all our staff for emergency care.” The investigation includes staff from: the Ministry of Health, Social Security, the 1322 call center, paramedics from the Red Cross and specialists from the private laboratory, said the ministry in its statement. The authorities are expected to publish the result of this investigation within the next few days. On Tuesday, the ministry announced that it had authorized three additional private laboratories to carry out the covid-19 test. These laboratories are Echandi, Hospital La Católica and Hospital Cima. These are in addition to other private laboratories that were authorized last week. Those are LABIN, Hospital Clínica Bíblica, Páez, Laboratorio San José and Hospital Metropolitano. The public hospitals that are carrying out covid-19 medical tests are San Juan de Dios, Hospital México, Hospital Nacional de Niños, INCIENSA and the Laboratory of the University of Costa Rica. As of Wednesday there are 28 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 375 patients infected with coronavirus covid-19 in the country. Of those patients, 15 are being treated in public hospitals, eight of them have been reported in intensive care with delicate health conditions. The patients ages range from 1 to 87 with an average age of 40. Of those, 14 are children under the age of 13, 337 are between 18 and 70 years old, and 24 are elder patients over the age of 70. Of those infected, 181 are women (48%) and 194 are men (52%). It was reported 346 infected cases are Costa Ricans and 29 are foreigners. Four coronavirus patients fully recovered. Two of those were U.S. citizens who were reported to have left the country. Seven patients are already in the process of receiving results from their latest medical tests hoping to be cleared and classified as fully recovered from the virus, as well as not being a threat to the public. As was previously reported, two patients hospitalized in intensive care at San Rafael Hospital in Alajuela Province, both 87-year-old seniors died due to the coronavirus covid-19. Since the virus was detected in the country in the first week of March, 3,843 people have been ruled out. ![]() The rapid spread of the virus throughout Costa Rica left the ministry to create a map of the country on the UNED University website, where the number of infected people in each canton is updated daily. As of today, the pandemic has killed 46,496 people around the world, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. ------------------------------ Should authorities enable covid-19 medical tests in rural public hospitals?
