Teen Challenge visits Jacó
By Vivian Wolf
Adult and Teen Challenge is a worldwide network of Christian faith-based corporations intended to help teenagers, adults, and families with problems such as substance abuse or self-destructive behavior.
Their mission: The Official Statement of Purpose of Adult and Teen Challenge is “To provide youths, adults and families with an effective and comprehensive Christian faith-based solution to life-controlling problems, such as substance abuse, in order to become productive members of society. By applying biblical principles, Teen Challenge endeavors to help people become mentally-sound, emotionally-balanced, socially-adjusted, physically-well and spiritually-alive”
Teen Challenge Oklahoma arrived in San José April 28 hosted by Charles Boyd, CEO of the Costa Rica Team and founder of Support Jacó Youth. There were 19 members in all, including the teens and counselors. They proceeded to make their way to our beautiful little surf town of Jacó* where they checked into their hotel and got a much needed good night’s rest.
Charles is a strong believer in the principle of giving back and supports the Teen Challenge ministry. As much as possible, Charles heads back to where his own Teen Challenge days were spent to lead worship and share his insights about what God is capable of doing in one’s life.
On April 29 I and one of my coworkers at The Costa Rica Team got the great opportunity to put on our Support Jacó Youth t-shirts and join the boys and girls of Teen Challenge on a spur-of-the-moment beach clean-up here in Jacó. It was amazing to see the team work and positive energy they displayed. After some well-done cleaning and finding some rather large pieces of trash on the beach, we all got rewarded by having a pizza party at the Support Jacó Youth fitness center.
As if that was not enough, we were invited by Charles, the very next day to join the Teen Challenge group for a zip line tour at Ocean Ranch Park. What a great adventure it was. We all met at the hotel that the group was staying at, and two vans picked us up to take us to our destination.
The tour included a delicious typical casado lunch, and then we were off to our adventure among the rain-forest canopy. It was an incredible experience, soaring through the air and sharing the day with our new friends, one that will not be forgotten. Thank you, Teen Challenge Oklahoma.
