Lankester Botanical Garden holds its
annual bonsai exhibition this weekend

The Lankester Botanical Garden of the University of Costa Rica. located in the town of Paraiso in Cartago*, and Bonsai Center of Costa Rica plan the National Exposition of Bonsai 2019 Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The exhibitions will be held in the Japanese Garden, a space that was built in the Lankester Garden with the support of the Japanese Embassy. The area is made up of three cabins, trails, bridges and lagoons.
About 150 trees will be on display at the exposition, the university said. In addition, cultural events will be held by the Embassy of Japan,and there will be six practical workshops to learn this ancient oriental art.
The attractions are complemented by sales of food, plants, tools, pots and other materials for gardening.
Bonsai has its origin in China about 2,000 years ago as an object of worship and representation of eternity, since the tree was conceived as a bridge between the divine and the human. Later it was taken to Japan by Buddhists where it developed almost like a philosophy of life.
This art has conquered many followers in the West, and in Costa Rica, a lot of people are dedicated to its cultivation or simply admire the results.
Bonsai is the art of growing potted trees and shrubs. It consists of reducing the size of these plants by means of various techniques such as transplanting, pruning, wiring and clamping or blunting in order to give them a form and a meaning.
