The Drug Control Police captured 25 suspects on
Wednesday all suspected of being members of a gang
of drug traffickers.
The investigation of this case began in October
2017, after several complaints were filed through
the confidential and free line: 1-1-7-6.
The police report that raids were made in Guanacaste*, San José*, Alajuela*, Heredia*, and Puntarenas*. In addition to
the 25 people captured, the police had previously
arrested ten other people who are currently in
pre-trial prison.
The agents discovered that this gang had several
properties and vehicles with which they
transported the drugs.
"The gang is linked to eight previous cases, among
those other gangs that were denounced for selling
drugs in the town of Carrillo* in Guanacaste,
which had as its leader a man surnamed Ruíz," the
police said in their report
The members of the gang who were arrested
yesterday Wednesday are:
- A man arrested in Naranjo*, surnamed Araya,
who is suspected of selling cocaine, marijuana in
Guanacaste, Alajuela, Puntarenas, and San José.
- Ten men, also detained in Naranjo, suspected of
being Araya's accomplices. These men are surnamed
Matamoros, Oporto, Ávila, Porras, Well-Arce,
Quesada, Talavera, Lacayo, Chacón and Ruguma.
Apparently, they were in charge of the storage,
transportation, and sale of drugs in Guanacaste,
as well as the collection of money obtained from
sales.
- In San Jose* a man surnamed
García was arrested. He is suspected of
distributing drugs in Upala.
- Three other detainees in San Jose surnamed Araya
and two brothers citizens of Colombia surnamed
Restrepo, are suspected of storing drugs and
making shipments to Guanacaste.
- Three other detainees surnamed Mora and Flores,
and another man not yet identified, suspected of
selling drugs in Quepos* and Manuel Antonio*.
- Two women were arrested surnamed Chavarría and
Medina also suspected of selling drugs in
Carrillo.
- Five men arrested in Guanacaste were surnamed
Guzmán, Ruíz, Villarreal, Castañeda, and Peña,
also suspected of selling drugs in Carrillo.
In addition to the arrests, the officers seized
drugs, weapons, ammunition, and money. It is
expected that in the next few hours, the police
will report on the quantities of weapons, drugs
and money seized.
All the suspects were taken to the cells of the
Public Ministry, where they must face the process
of investigation with the agents of the Judicial
Investigation Organization.
A judge is expected to order pre-trial measures
against the suspects.
