The government, through the Institute of Rural
Development, known as INDER, invested more than
₡304.8 million colones (about $513,466) to build
an irrigation system for farmers in the
community of San Isidro* in the
province of Alajuela.
"The project (referring to the irrigation
system) consisted in the construction of a
network of pipelines for the conduction and
distribution of water, with a length of 17
kilometers, to carry water from Quebrada
Desamparados to the different farms located in
sectors such as San Isidro Centro, Calle Varela,
Calle Fernández and Bajo Ramírez. In total
the irrigation system would cover an area of 25
hectares," the Institute said in its statement.
The distribution of the water will be a
combination of continuous flow and irrigation
modules, using for this second case a frequency
of irrigation of 3 days. The construction
included the excavation of land, installation of
a pipeline, construction of a tank, the elevated
bridge construction and the installation of the
irrigation system.
The Institute reported that the National
Underground Water Service, known as Senara,
carried out studies to guarantee water supply
throughout the year for 80 people from the
territories of Atenas*, Palmares*, Naranjo*, San Ramón* and Zarcero*.
