The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the agreement between the government and the Russian Federation will enter into force as of May 25, abolishing the need for travel visas between the two nations.
The Ministry said the agreement was signed in May 2018. Russian citizens and Costa Rican citizens can travel between the countries without having to carry out any visa authorization process.
"Costa Rican citizens who hold current ordinary passports have the right to enter, transit, stay and leave the territory of the Russian Federation for multiple entries without a visa for up to 90 calendar days, counted from their first entry, during each period 180 calendar days," said the Ministry in its statement.
Similarly, Russian citizens with valid passports obtain the same rights to enter Costa Rica without having to apply for a visa.
This right of free entry is just for tourism. The benefit does not apply if the person will travel for work or commercial activity in the country, either to Russia or Costa Rica.
In the case that a person wishes to engage in a non-tourism activity, there must be a corresponding visa process. This rule also applies to both countries.
Prior to this mutual agreement between Russia and Costa Rica, Russians have to request a tourist visa to stay in Costa Rica for a maximum of 30 days and Costa Ricans needed a tourist visa to travel to Russia.
According to the Ministry, the Soviet Union established diplomatic relations with Costa Rica on May 8, 1944.
