Doctors of the National Blood Bank* are
calling on residents to donate blood so that it
can maintain sufficient reserves to supply
hospital needs due to a growth of accidents.
Dr. Alba Ávila Rocha, a microbiologist, said
that "at least 120 donors are required daily at
the facilities of the National Blood Bank."
The donation clinic is located on the south side
of the Catholic Church of Zapote* in San José. They
will remain open from Monday to Friday, from 7
a.m. until 3:20 p.m.
According to the specialists, each donor will
have about 450 milliliters of blood drawn, which
represents about 10 percent of the volume of
blood that each human being possesses. The blood
volume that is donated is recovered during the
day and therefore the consumption of enough
liquid is recommended after each donation. Each
person can donate every three months or four
times a year.
The blood bank requires all types of blood to
attend to any eventuality: O +, A + b + ab + O-,
B-, A- and AB-. Blood type O + is the most
required because the majority of the population
has this blood type.
To be a blood donor you must:
• Be between 18 and 65 years old.
• Weigh a minimum of 50 kg.
• Eat a light breakfast that does not include
dairy or fat before donation and drink half a
liter of water prior to the donation
• Be in good health.
• Wait two weeks after recovering from a cold to
donate blood.
• Wait one year after getting piercings or
tattoos to donate
• Any hypertensive person with treatment who is
under normal pressure.
• Wait at least 14 days after antibiotic
treatment .
Diabetics who use only oral hypoglycemic agents
such as metformin and who fulfill the
requirements may donate blood.
Blood components are used in general
transfusions in cases of emergency or surgery
and in people with coagulation problems (liver
diseases and leukemia, among others) surgeries
in patients with anemia and with problems of
blood production.
