The Public Services Regulatory Authority approved
an increase in cost of electric service requested
by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute of 4.82
percent
The organization said that the Institute had
requested an increase of 9.95 percent, but that,
after they analyzed the figures presented by the
Institute in terms of investments and expenses,
that percentage was rejected.
"In compliance with the law, in the process of any
regular study, rigorous technical analysis was
made of the estimates of income, expenses, costs,
and investments that support the petition, with
the purpose of ensuring compliance with the
service principle, at the cost and, at the same
time, harmonize the interests of consumers, users
and providers," said the Regulatory institution in
its statement.
Representatives of the Regulatory Authority also
made visits to the Institute to verify the
information provided in the request for the rate
increase.
"Some of the investments of the Institute were not
properly justified, so those were excluded from
analysis. To recognize the new rates, the costs,
expenses, and investments (of the electric
institute) must not be excessive," said the
Authority in its statement.
Another change made in the rates was the
calculation in colones of the rate designated to
large companies, which use more than 1 million Kwh
per month. Before those rates were calculated in
dollars.

The Institute had

That was affecting the companies electricity
expenses, related to the increase of the dollar
value.
The new electricity services rate will apply from
April 1 to December 31.
