Dear A.M. Costa Rica readers:
As a Costa Rican citizen, I feel obligated to defend my country, especially when it is being subject of severe criticism often free. This is a demilitarized country, it has a low illiteracy rate, with consolidated democracy, and social security constantly getting better, which could perfectly well be compared to the one of a country of the first world in many respects. Costa Rica offers many advantages as to be considers a retirement country.
Although that, during the last months, as a product of a very aggressive media effort, there has been an attempt to sell the idea that Costa Rica´s institutionality is seriously compromised, corruption swarms in public institutions, and justice was bought by a care network guaranteeing impunity to mafia members permeating the entire state apparatus.
These statements product of irresponsible journalism, achieve their only goal to sell! However, at the cost of dirtying the image of a country where the citizens, (foreigners included too) try day by day to dignify more the nation.
You can see the news regarding officials who have failed in their duty of probity, and think everything is corrupted. However, to see things that way is a hurried analysis, logic should lead us to consider that an official exposed for irregular acts, and persecuted by the state apparatus, necessarily means there is a response from the state against corruption. Otherwise, none of that news would have initiated investigations that resulted in removals of those senior officials from their positions, plus serious accusations from the public ministry.
We should not throw ourselves into despair, on the contrary, we should all get involved in making this beautiful country into a better country, which could be done with knowledge and a critical analysis of our reality.

Each citizen should look for information about the laws, habits and ways of doing things; so he/she can defend himself/herself from arbitrariness, when been a victim of it.
