Statistics from the Ministry of Security report
that, during the first four months of 2019, there
were 44 fewer homicides fewer than in the same
period of 2018.
During the first third of 2018, from January to
April, there were 209 homicides. During the same
period of 2019, only 165 murders have been
registered 165 murders, a decrease of 21 percent.
According to the Ministry, the homicides for revenge decreased. Firearms
remain the most used weapon in homicides and murder
showed the largest decrease in San José, Alajuela
and Cartago.
The ministry credits the teamwork of the police with
the agents of the Judicial Investigation
Organization and the specialist of Prosecutor's
Office for the decrease in homicides with part of
the success due to the 101 mega patrol operations in
2018.
"We are very pleased with the results we have so
far, which makes us continue to work harder," said
Michael Soto, Minister of Security. "In addition to
the decline in homicides, we have also recorded a
decrease in the common robbery as in houses or
vehicles."
In January, as A.M. Costa Rica published, President
Carlos Alvarado announced the goal of safeguarding
peace and tranquility in the country, with mega
patrol operations to prevent crimes.
"I want people to feel safe, I want they can leave
their homes without fear and danger," said President
Alvarado.
According to Minister Soto that mega patrol operations are
a good strategy to prevent crime. In addition the actions that have been taken to
reinforce security and prevent crime. Among the most
important are:
-The U.S. Embassy is financing the strategy to
prevent crimes, known as "Let's Plant Security",
which began on September 1, 2018, and was held in
the 82 cantons of the country. The strategy is that
officers travel around the country visiting
municipalities and interviewing people to know what
factors generate insecurity in each place.
-The Chinese government made a donation of ₡3,378
million colones (about $5,586,887) that was invested
in the purchase of telecommunications equipment and
protection for the officers.
- The Ministry of Security appointed 579 officers
from the Police Academy to reinforce the vigilance
and carry out preventive activities such as: "La
Mejenga" (the game), which is to interact with
children at the social risk by means of a soccer
game.
- In addition, there has been a reinforcement of
many police organizations such as police, police on
horseback, traffic police, border police, air
surveillance police, coast guard officers,
immigration police, national emergency commission
officers, park rangers, firemen and Red Cross, among
others.
The Ministry of Security reported that there was a
decrease in homicides last year, from 603 homicides
in 2017 to 587 in 2018.
Security Ministry mega patrol operations to prevent
crimes will continue throughout the country.
