A delegation of 6 students from Jesús Jiménez in the
province of Cartago* School traveled to
Detroit, Michigan, United States to represent our
country in the international First LEGO League (FLL)
competition.
The students will present the spatial shower design
that allows astronauts to bathe in zero gravity from
the residue of hydrogen as if they were on earth.
On the eve of their departure, the experiment was
demonstrated by the students to President Carlos
Alvarado.
"Projects like these exemplify one of the many
fruits of the courageous decision that 150 years ago
declared compulsory primary education, free and paid
by the state," said President Alvarado. "I have a
wonderful hope about what our education can achieve
in the next 150 years."
The research group is made up of children whose ages
are between 10 and 12 years old.
The students, Luis Sánchez, Helena Murillo, Ián
Avilés, Mauricio Rodríguez, Deidelyn Navarro and
Paulo Centeno, are traveling accompanied by their
tutors and the principal of the school.
"It has been a very, very hard way, we have worked
extraordinary time, Saturdays and Sundays," said
robotics teacher Daniela Pineda. "Not only
academically, but also doing activities, knocking on
doors to raise the necessary funds to finance the
trip to Detroit where we will compete with European
and Asian countries."
The theme of Lego 2018-2019 is about space, so the
kids had to create something related to robotics and
improve the quality of life of astronauts in space.
The children met in Liberia, Guanacaste*, with the
president of Ad Astra, astronaut Franklin Chang, as
well as representatives of the Irazú Project (first
Costa Rican satellite in space) of the Costa Rican
Technological Institute in Cartago*.
At the Jesús Jiménez de Cartago school, robotics
workshops have been held for 17 years. Eight years
ago three students competed in Malaysia.
Last year a group of six students worked on a
robotics project that explains how water reaches
their school, what the problems of distribution of
the liquid are within the institution and how to
take care of it.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international
competition organized for elementary and middle
school students, ages 9 to 16.
