Social Security invested over $19 million
in new vaccination campaign

Social Security started a new vaccination campaign on Tuesday with an investment of ¢11.6 billion colones (about $19,642,436).

The campaign is part of the ‘Vaccination Week of the Americas’ and started with patients at the Monseñor Sanabria Hospital in Puntarenas*.

The ‘Vaccination Week of the Americas’ is celebrated during this week in all the countries of the Americas, with the goal of strengthening the high vaccine coverage rates to ensure that the population has the benefits of the vaccination scheme of each country.

According to Social Security, the goal is that parents will take their children to clinics this week to complete their vaccinations and be vaccinated if their own vaccinations are not complete.

The ‘Vaccination Week of the Americas’ is an initiative of the Pan American Health Organization and is held every year. This year the motto is "Protect your community, do your part and get vaccinated."

According to Dr. Leandra Abarca-Gómez, coordinator of the immunization program, "on this occasion, the different teams of the institution have organized to carry out a review of vaccination schemes that allow them to be completed in accordance with the plan in force in the national territory.”

The new campaign will protect patients from at least 14 diseases: meningeal tuberculosis, haemophilus influenza, tetanus, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, whooping cough, pneumococcal diseases, influenza, rabies, chicken pox, measles, rubella, mumps, and hepatitis B.

Social Security specialists introduced two additional vaccines to the vaccination scheme which will increase the protection of the population throughout the life cycle: these are the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine and the Rotavirus vaccine.

Social Security statistics show that during 2018, were provided 3,047,167 doses of vaccines. The application of vaccines exceeded 95 percent, including a 97 percent coverage in vaccines against varicella and the vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, haemophilus, and pneumococcus.

The goal of Social Security is to maintain that percentage or surpass it to reduce the possibility of transmitting those diseases that are prevented by vaccination.
