According to the statistics of the General
Directorate of Traffic, during the month of March,
52 people died due in traffic accidents, the highest
figure in the last 2 years, when in April of 2017
there were 53 deaths.
The police report that the majority of deaths, 29
people, were motorcyclists. In second place are the
10 deaths in vehicle accidents, followed by three
deaths in bicycle accidents.
Compared with the reports of the previous months, 32
deaths in January and 30 deaths in February, the
month of March exceeded those numbers by 60 percent
in January and by 70 percent in February.
German Marín, director of the Traffic Police,
reports that despite the fact that motorcyclists
lead the road deaths statistics, part of the fault
lies with the drivers' attitude towards
motorcyclists and the pressure felt by motorcyclists
who work in delivery services.
Some drivers disregard driving rules and throw the
vehicle to motorcyclists. "In the case of work, the
bosses pressure the motorcyclists to make deliveries
in record time, and all this is affecting this
epidemic", said Marin.
However, another part of the blame is the
motorcyclists who are not prepared to drive, "in
some cases they buy the motorcycle, they approve the
driving course and they already believe that it is
enough," said Marin.
Marin adds that signs of the lack of experience in
the handling of motorcycles such as driving "on the
sidewalks, in opposite direction, advancing on the
right or leaving lights in red or high, it is clear
that they are not responsible persons."

Statistics of
the Traffic Directorate show that since 2014,
motorcycle accidents have been the leading cause of
death on the road. During this year 61 of the 114
dead were motorcyclists, which is equivalent to 54
percent of the deceased.
"There is a premeditated decision by the
motorcyclist to increase the chances of dying on the
road," said Marín.
During this year, the main mistakes of motorcyclists
on the road are the imprudence of the driver, which
caused 36 people killed in accidents. Speeding is
the second most common cause with 25 deaths.
The typical imprudent moves of motorcyclists are:
making a U turn in prohibited zone, failure to stop
at a light or stop sign, driving in the wrong
direction and advancing on a vehicle on the right.
"The behavior is so carefree and violent on the
roads that they are already overcoming the abuse of
speed as the main cause of death," said Marin.
