Dubai invites Vice President Campbell and
delegation to VII World Summit of Governments

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the Costa Rica is the only Latin American country asked to send a delegation to the World Government Summit 2019 that will be held from February 10 to 12. Some 4,000 participants from 150 nations will meet in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The delegation of Costa Rica is composed of Vice President Epsy Campbell, Minister of National Planning Pilar Garrido Gonzalo, interim Foreign Minister Lorena Aguilar Revelo, and Social Security's President, Román Macaya Hayes.

The total cost of the trip of the Vice President and her committee was financed by the government of the United Arab Emirates.

World Government Summit 2019 is an annual meeting of world leaders in to discuss more than 100 topics in seminars, talks and interactive workshops on governance, artificial intelligence, sustainable development, and climate change, among others.

Summit 2019 includes personalities such as Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, and José Angel Gurría, General Secretary of OECD, among others.

"The country's choice as a special guest was a recognition of the national leadership in environmental public policy and innovative practices in conservation and environmental protection, as well as the de-carbonization plan of the economy of Alvarado Government, " said the Ministry on its statement.

In this meeting, Costa Rica will be presented for its promotion of sustainability, the promotion of women's empowerment, advances in artificial intelligence and achievements and challenges regarding climate change, topics that will be discussed in the different panels and forums that will take place.

According to the Ministry, the Costa Rican committee will hold meetings with the highest authorities of the United Arab Emirates and with representatives of international financial organizations such as the World Bank among others.

"Vice President Campbell will present part of a catalog of projects and investments, will talk about the bilateral relationship, non-reimbursable cooperation, financial cooperation, focusing on the areas of health, foreign trade, sustainable development and climate change," said the Ministry on its statement.

In August 2018, A.M Costa Rica reported that the United Arab Emirates had opened an Embassy in Costa Rica, after Juma Rashed Khamis Al-Rumaithi presented his credentials to President Carlos Alvarado.

The diplomatic headquarters of the United Arab Emirates focuses on cooperation, identifying potential investments and promoting trade in both tracks.

Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates signed diplomatic relations in 2010. Over the last two years, and especially after the February 2016 visit of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the two government’s ties were strengthened.

The ministry reports that the governments signed eleven international agreements in that period, among them an investment promotion and protection agreement, and an air transport agreement.

In addition, the United Arab Emirates contributed a non-refundable fund of 10 million dollars to rebuild the water mains of the northern part of the country after they were damaged by Hurricane Otto.
