Criminal Court of San Jose sentenced four men to a total of 40 years in prison, after the evidence provided by the Public Prosecutor's Office proved that they had were involved in drug trafficking.
Those sentenced are identified with the surnames Gamboa-Jiménez, Cortés-Morales and Rodríguez-Jiménez. They were all police officers.
In addition to the three former police officers, a fourth man, Alfaro-Corrales, was also convicted as being a member of the trafficking gang.
The evidence showed that the four men sentenced were arrested on February 2, 2018 inside a hotel in downtown San Jose.
The accusation of the Office of the Prosecutor stated that on February 2, 2018, the policemen entered the hotel and said that they would carry out a job in room #G7. Minutes later, the three of them went down to the first floor with bags.
During the journey, one of the bags broke and a rectangular package fell to the ground. At that moment, Alfaro-Corrales, who was not a policeman, appeared and after observing what was happening, decided to return to his room. Alfaro- Corrales was the person who rented the room.
The police received a call alerting them to an unusual situation that was taking place in the room. When the police officers answered the call and arrived at the hotel together with agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization, an inspection of the room was carried out and bags containing 54 packets of cocaine were found. In the room where Alfaro was staying, the bailiffs seized 19 more packages for a total of 73 packages of cocaine.
When the agents reviewed the videos and other evidence, they realized that the people involved were policemen.
