U.S. hospital ship Comfort will arrive Sunday By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The hospital ship Comfort will arrive in Puntarenas Sunday to offer free medical care in the country for five days starting Tuesday as part of the United States support to the region, “which suffers from the political crisis in Nicaragua and Venezuela, and related migration challenges,” said the U.S. Embassy in a statement. Medical services will be offered from Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the gym El Coloso in Barranca and in the Association of Pensioners of Puntarenas in Chacarita. According to Social Security, currently three Costa Rican doctors are part of the crew. They are Gina Víquez Rojas, medical specialist in emergency medicine, Pablo Rodríguez Chaves, a physician the health area, and Carolina Leal Zúñiga, a pharmacist. Also, two other Costa Rican doctors will join the crew upon arrival to the country. They are Vladimir Briceño Elizondo and Hubert Zamora Mena. Medical personnel on board the hospital ship will offer medical evaluation and treatment, preventive medicine, dental examinations and treatment, optometry exams and eyeglasses delivery, pediatrics, dermatology, women’s health, physical therapy services, laboratory analyses, delivery of medicines, general ambulatory surgery of hernia and gallstones aboard the ship, to patients previously selected by the Social Security, ophthalmological surgery of cataracts and ocular pterygium aboard the ship, to patients previously selected by the Social Security, among others. Veterinary services will be provided with a mobile clinic from the National Animal Health Service, know as SENASA. Staffers will provide free care for dogs and cats in the Plaza del Pacífico in Puntarenas Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This will be the seventh time that the U.S. Navy ship Comfort has carried out humanitarian missions in the Americas and the Caribbean. Visits were in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2018. The last visit to Costa Rica was in 2011. The Comfort will also visit Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Panamá, Perú, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. --------------------------- What another type of medical treatment support could the U.S. government offers to Costa Ricans?
