More than 1,000 drunk drivers caught already this year, police report By the A.M. Costa Rica staff From January to June, 1,260 drivers registered positive on the breathalyzer test, according to the most recent statistics provided by the Traffic Police. Of these, 945 drivers, equivalent to 75 percent, were arrested and taken to the cells of the Public Ministry due to the high level of alcohol. Some 167 more drivers tested positive, but with minimum levels of alcohol consumption, so, according to the Traffic Law, they were not sanctioned. The remainder, 148, were fined but not arrested, based on the quantity of alcohol in their blood. According to the Traffic Law, the penalty for drunk driving is $553, six points on the driver's license record, and seizure of the driver license. The driver must repeat the driving test in order to seek the license again. "On drunken drivers, the results have not been so negative. It is ranked as the fifth cause of death on the road. Even more pedestrians die due to imprudence," said German Marin Sandí, director of the Traffic Police. Of the 8,053 alcohol tests conducted in the first half of 2019, drivers who tested positive represent 15 percent. This figure is slightly below the 16 percent in 2018. Even police sometimes are driving drunk. July 14 in Aguas Zarcas* in San Carlos, a police officer names Hurtado lost control and crashed his patrol car into a palm tree while he was responding an accident that had killed a man. "It is clear that deaths on the road are painful, but the reduction of the figures gives us hope and optimism," said Marín. According to the statistics, 52 people died in March. One month later, in April five fewer people death for a record of 47. In May, the downward trend continued when 31 people died on road accidents. In a larger picture, during the first six months of this year, from January to June, 218 deaths were recorded. There are five fewer deaths than the same period in 2018. And there are also 22 fewer deaths than those reported in 2017. The motorcycle continues to be the type of vehicle linked to the highest number of deaths in road accidents with 55 in the first six months of the year. There were 43 deaths in accidents caused by a vehicle crossing into the oncoming lane, and 41 cases involving speeding.
