Government invests more than $800,000 in the repair of nine kilometers of road in Alajuela

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Road Nationality Council, known as Cosevi, announced the investment of $805,061 from its own budget, to repair nine kilometers of road between the communities of Barrio Corazón de Jesús and La Guácima in the province of Alajuela*.

According to the council, repairs began in July and will finish in October. The works are being done every night of the week from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. There are traffic officials and illuminated warning signs to help drivers.

The repair work includes the removal of the current 10-centimeter thick road layer and laying 10 centimeters of new asphalt, said the council in its statement.

In addition to the new asphalt, the painting also will be done.

Related on road repairs, as A.M. Costa Rica reported on July 11, the government announced an investment of $6.4 million in repairs in a stretch of the southern Interamerican Highway at Cerro de La Muerte*, the so-called hill of death.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, the repair will be made in the section between the communities of La Sierra and El Empalme.

According to Hannia Rosales of the National Road Council, the work on the road will be developing every day, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For this reason, there will be transit officials throughout the construction area, regulating the passage of drivers. So the officers have called on drivers to increase precautionary measures during the passage through the area under construction.

According to the ministry construction schedule, these road improvement works will last for five months.

Work on the first seven kilometer section of the scheduled improvements has been completed, the ministry said. That job cost about $1.8 million and involved pouring a cement base and applying a new asphalt layer.

This section of the highway is awaits traffic signs and lane marking, said the ministry.

Cerro de la Muerte is the highest point on the Interamerican Highway. In pre-automobile times those traveling on foot or driving an oxcart ran the risk of freezing to death if they overnighted in this area.
