Alert issued on liquor adulterated with methanol that has already killed one person By A.M. Costa Rica staff The Ministry of Health has warned the public about the sale of liquor carrying the Guaro Montano label, which has been adulterated with methanol and may be a counterfeit product. Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol originally was produced chiefly by the distillation of wood, hence the name wood alcohol. Sometimes methanol is created by bootleggers who are trying to produce ethanol, the type of alcohol usually found in beer, wine and liquor. Methanol is toxic two ways. First, methanol can be fatal due to effects on the central nervous system, acting as a depressant in the same manner as ethanol poisoning. Second, it is metabolized to formic acid that can cause blindness in those who drink it as well as frequent deaths. Because of its toxic properties, methanol is frequently used as a denaturant additive for ethanol manufactured for industrial uses to prevent the liquid from being used for drinking. According to the ministry's report, in recent months hospitals have been received cases of people intoxicated with methanol. In the information provided by patients and relatives, the poisoning happened after having drinking a fluid that carried the Guaro Montano label. The Ministry reports that one person already died due to intoxication with this liquor. Other hospitalized were said to be in serious condition. The symptoms are presented almost immediately after having drunk the liquor as drunkenness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, severe headache and lack of coordination of body movements. "The original product Guaro Montano is registered with the Ministry of Health with the registration number AS-Ni-12-06730 and is valid until Aug. 13, 2022, so it is suspected that it was counterfeit," said the ministry in its report. Due to the difficulty for people to distinguish between the original product and the fake, the specialists make the following recommendations: - Do not consume or buy Guaro Montano, until the alert is lifted. - The sale of Guaro Montano is forbidden until the alert is lifted. - If any person detects the sale of this product in any store, must report the sale of this product to the local police. Complaints can also be made by phone 2233-2854 and also at the email address elizabeth.solorzano@misalud.go.cr Recently, the Ministry also issued an alert on the condom brand Climax, as A.M. Costa Rica reported June 26. The ministry said the condom brand lacks required sanitary registration. According to a ministry statement, because this product does not have sanitary registration the people who use this product "may be exposed to serious health risks, since the materials with which they have been prepared are unknown, [as are] the conditions under which they have been manufactured, stored and transported." Individuals or companies that are selling products without sanitary registration are exposed to various administrative and criminal penalties. Specialists at the Ministry recommended that the public refrain from purchasing this type of condom. They also recommended that buyers verify that the product they are going to buy has the proper ministry authorization stamps. "If you have used this product, see a doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to it," said the ministry in its statement. The AM Costa Rica team asks readers to share this alert among their contacts. ------------------------------ Do you know if this brand of liquor is being sold in your community?
