If you travel by boat, take these basic safety measures from specialist By A.M. Costa Rica staff During half-year school holidays, many people prefer to travel on the ocean, lakes or rivers. For this reason, specialists issued a series of safety recommendations to reduce the risk of accidents. The Coast Guard of the Port Maritime Division advised boat owners as well as tourist to be sure that there are enough life vests on board, based on to the authorized passenger capacity. Additionally, the recommendation also urges that the vests are visible, accessible and in good condition. According to Jorge Hernández Chavarría, director of navigation and safety, "although it is true that the passengers are not experts, they can check that the belts of the vests are not broken or with excessive wear and that the closures fit properly." It is also recommended that children wear designer life jackets for children and not use the sizes for adults. In addition, every boat must have at least one lifebuoy and a rope that allows it to be thrown into the sea, the lagoon or the river in the case a person falls into the water by accident. Specialists also recommend that tourists verify that the boat has the certificate of navigation, that is a document obtained by any vessel owner that says the craft satisfactorily passed the annual technical inspection. "This document guarantees that the ship complies with all safety and navigation requirements in accordance with the law," said the specialists in its statement. A special recommendation is to never sail at night if the boat does not have the equipment for it. Postponing the trip when the weather is not good is also another advice, as well as verifying that the ship has an extinguisher and other security devices. Passengers should avoid leaning back on the guardrails of the boat to avoid the movement of the boat could cause a fall into the water, the specialists said. Operators and passengers of the boats should not drink alcohol before or during the trip, they added. Alcohol reduces a person's ability to see, hear and react to danger, they said. If a passenger detects that an operator of a vessel is under the influence of alcohol, he or she has the duty to report it immediately to the National Coast Guard Service and avoid boarding, they said. Also in the use a personal watercraft, every person traveling in that type of vehicle must wear a life jacket permanently. In Costa Rica, it is illegal for a person under 16 years old to drive a watercraft. "Those tips seek to reduce the risks in case of an emergency when navigating, as many people fail to take into account," say the specialists on its statement ------------------------------ What other safety recommendation would you give when traveling on a boat?
