Chamber of Commerce calls on truck's drivers to end road blockades By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Chamber of Commerce has called on drivers to negotiate to restore order and avoid economic losses for different sectors of production in the country as a result of their protests and highway blockades. According to the chamber statistics, the last national strike of public employees, which took place from September to December of last year, generated losses to 76 percent of stores and companies. "There have been reports of delays in the delivery of merchandise, which represents an increase in the cost of inputs that are being transported and that are not arriving on time, or that are rotting, as on the case of refrigerated agricultural products, " said the chamber in its statement. The chamber announced its opposition to the protesters who are creating chaos. "This is unacceptable and it is not a way to establish negotiation," said the chamber in its statement. The chamber in its statement called on the government to defend the right of the majority to continue carrying out economic activity. In addition, the chamber asked the Government to reduce "the growth of an increasingly inefficient government." According to the updated traffic police report, at the close of this edition, roadblocks were reported on: - Route #1* in Liberia, Guanacaste. - Route #2* in Pérez Zeledón, Rio Claro and Palmar Norte. - Route #4 * in Chilamate, Monterrey, and Guatuso. - Route #10* in Siquirres. - Route #27* in Orotina and Atenas. - Route #32* in Guapiles and Limon. - Route #34* in Uvita and Bahia Ballena. - Route #35* on the bridge over the San Carlos River. - Route #126* in Sarapiquí. - Route #140* San Carlos and Aguas Zarcas. - Route #141* Cuidad Quesada. As A.M. Costa Rica reported Monday, representatives of the transport union met with President Carlos Alvarado and a group of other government officials. The group maintained as a requirement to keep negotiating with them the exit of the minister of Public Education, Edgar Mora, said the government in its statement. During the negotiations, the Ombudsman's of Costa Rica, Catalina Crespo, and her staff members decided to leave the room as disagreement with the condition stipulated by the unions (the dismissal of the minister of Public Education). The union of trailers drivers were represented by attorney Héctor Monestel, who said that the main issue at the meeting was to give a moratorium on the application of value-added tax for transport services. But another sector of the union is demanding the dismissal of Minister Mora as a condition of continuing negotiations with the government. Truckers have been protesting against the new tax since last week and have joined the protests of the unions of employees of the Ministry of Education.
