Specialists call to high risk groups to maintain the vaccination scheme up to date, especially the influenza vaccine. / A.M. Costa Rica wire services photo.

More than 700,000 patients treated for
respiratory infections this year, says report

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Due to the increase in respiratory infections in the country, Social Security specialists called on the population to increase preventive measures to reduce viral transmission caused by respiratory infections.

Social Security statistics show that this year, the cases of patients with respiratory infections have increased 189,124 patients over the same period last year. In 2019, 726,124 patients were treated for acute respiratory infections so far.

According to Dr. Daysi Corrales Díaz, medical manager of Social Security, it is urgent that the population take preventive measures both to avoid illness and to be alert for coming the Saharan Air Layer, which can cause irritations in the airways.

The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is an extremely hot, dry and sometimes dust-laden layer of the atmosphere that often overlies the cooler, more-humid air surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

In the Sahara Desert region of North Africa, where it originates, it is the prevalent atmosphere, extending from the surface upwards several kilometers. As it drives, or is driven, out over the ocean, it is lifted above the denser marine air.

Disturbances such as large thunderstorm complexes over North Africa periodically result in vast dust and sand storms, some of which extend as high as 6,000 meters. These can be driven out to be within the SAL as far the American continent.

Specialists advise hygienic precautionary measures such as washing hands, getting a flu shot, practicing good health habits, trying flu antiviral drugs, maintaining the immune system and avoiding smoking.

In addition, a call is made to members of high risk groups to maintain the vaccination scheme up to date, especially the influenza vaccine.

Doctors report that the people at higher risk of coming down with the flu and therefore needing the vaccine are:

- All children over six months and under six years.

- All elders over 65 years old.

- Pregnant women in any month of gestation.

- People over six years of age and under 60 with some risk factors such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory diseases, cancer, obese people, chronic kidney disease, immunosuppressed people, with cirrhosis, with hemoglobinopathies, immunological diseases, and neurological problems, among others.
