Three people per week are hospitalized
by Guillain-Barré, say specialists

Social Security reports that on average three people are hospitalized per week as the result of the syndrome known as Guillain-Barré.

Guillain-Barré syndrome cause long-term nervous system damage.

According to Social Security statistics, between 1997 and 2018,  3,138 people were hospitalized. That is, an average of 149 cases per year.

The syndrome involves both men and women. Of every 10 cases, six are men and four are women.

In the same period, cases were recorded in all ages from 1 year to more than 75 years.

The groups with the major impact by age are different according to gender. "In men, the first place is the group from 20 to 44 years old, and the second one is from 45 to 64 years old," said Social Security in its statement. "In women, it happens, on the contrary: the group with the major impact is  from 45 to 65 years old, and the second one is  from 20 to 44 years old."

The syndrome Guillain Barn happens when the body's immune system attacks the nervous system. Other symptoms include nerve inflammation, muscle weakness or paralysis.

According to the specialist, the common thing is that the syndrome affects the myelin, which is the covering of the nerve, and this leads to nerve signals moving more slowly so that the first symptoms are weakness and tingling in the extremities.

"Myelin is something like the linings of electrical cables and the syndrome destroys them," said Dennis Chinchilla, chief of neurology at Hospital México

Therefore, the doctor reports that the treatment consists of giving medicines to stop the destruction of the myelin and then allow time for the body to regenerate it again on its own.

According to specialists, muscle weakness or paralysis affects both sides of the body. In most cases, it starts in the legs and then it happens that it extends to the arms. This ascending progressive weakness is very important in recognizing the syndrome and those experiencing such symptoms should request a neurologist review immediately.
