All pregnant women should be vaccinated against influenza, say specialists By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Social Security specialists are calling on all pregnant women to go as soon as possible to be vaccinated against seasonal influenza viruses. The goal of this call is to reduce the risk of a series of complications that can occur during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum, they said. According to specialists, during pregnancy women are more vulnerable to infections because many sometimes have low defenses, and, therefore, it is advisable to take protective measures such as vaccination. "It is important for the population to protect themselves because the faster they act, there is a collective protection effect that favors the population more quickly," said Leandra Abarca, a physician and coordinator of the Immunization program. José Miguel Villalobos Brenes, director of the Women's Hospital, said: "The vaccine is transcendental in the period of pregnancy to protect newborns from complications that may put their health at risk, among them the possibility of being born prematurely." According to the statistics of Social Security, 293,000 vaccines have been supplied. This means that there is still more than one million women pending to receive this vaccine Social Security purchased 1.3 million doses for $6.7 million to develop the vaccination campaign that seeks to protect: - All children over 6 months and under 6 years. - All adults over 65. - Pregnant women in any month of pregnancy. - People over 6 years of age and under 60 with risk factors such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory diseases, cancer, obesity, chronic kidney disease, cirrhosis, immunological diseases and neurological problems, among others. According to Social Security, this year's vaccine was purchased in South America and protects against two strains of influenza A virus and two strains of virus B that are circulating in the country this year. The Social Security authorities said they hope that this year the response of the population to the vaccination call will surpass the results of 2018 when protection coverage was achieved close to 92 percent. People who are not within the vaccination group of this campaign can get the vaccine in pharmacies or private clinics. ------------------------------ Have you already been vaccinated against influenza?
