Government statistics report that in the year, from May 2018 to May 2019, more than 500 students who had to stop studying in order to work have returned to their studies as a condition to receive economic support from the Ministry of Education program, known as Conditional Cash Transfers.

The transfers work as an economic aid to young people on the condition that they continue studying.

The economic support program for those students has cost about $340,860, said the Ministry.

The 2016 National Household Survey said that there are around 30,000 working minors in the country. Regarding the eradication of child labor in the country, Minister Steven Núñez Rímola said: "our country is very close to meeting the goal of eradicating child labor and the worst forms of adolescent labor.”

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) statistics on child labor in the world:

- 152 million children work in the world.

- More than half, 73 million, do so under extreme and dangerous conditions that threaten their safety, health, education, and development.

- 1/4 of children working in dangerous conditions are under 12 years old.

- 36 million girls between 5 and 14 years of age perform domestic chores more than 21 hours per week.

- 9 out of 10 children working in the world live in Africa or Asia.

"They have no way out, they live exploited, with no escape, mostly in Africa and Asia, and if we do not act now, we condemn them to a life of poverty and exclusion," UNICEF said in its statement.

The areas with the largest number of child laborers are: mines, garbage dumps, in the streets, factories, on plantations handling dangerous machinery, and as domestic employees.
