Congress approves $550 fine for colliding with a train By

The Ministry of Transportation announced the validity of a reform to the traffic law, approved by the deputies of the Legislative Assembly, and endorsed by President Carlos Alvarado, in which the fine for colliding with a train was increased to about $550. The new fine has the goal of punishing drivers who disrespect the priority right of way of trains. In addition, traffic authorities hope that this more expensive fine will make drivers more cautious. "Unfortunately, many people are unaware that they must stop at a train crossing, whether there are traffic sings or not, whether a train comes or not. Drivers always have to stop the car," said German Marin, Director of the Traffic Police. "The problem is that drivers do not stop and are causing damage to trains, carriages and security systems." According to the new law, the penalty will include 6 points on the license of the driver. This penalty will force the driver to take a road safety education course, every day from Monday through Friday, and pass a new driver’s test with a score of at least 80 percent. Another new fine has been put in place for crashing into railway signs that are placed at the train intersections. In this case, the fine is $366 and 4 penalties points will on the driver's license. Deputies also approved a fine for stopping on or near the tracks and not allowing a train to continue. That fine is $185 but carries no license penalty points. Related to other types of fines, as AM Costa Rica reported on May 23, the new traffic law increases the fines as follows: - For carrying children under 12 years old without the safety device. The fine is approximately $370, plus four negative points on the driver's license. - The law prohibits a child under the age of 5 from traveling by motorcycle precisely because of the inability of such small persons to adequately support themselves on the motorcycle or the adult who transports them. In the case of this fault, the fine is the same, $370, plus four points are accumulated against the driver's license. - Regarding the failure to use a seat belt, the fine is approximately $185 but there are no penalty of points on the driver's license. - With respect to motorcyclists, failure to wear a helmet or wearing it incorrectly the fine is $185, but no penalty points. - Fines for drivers using their cell phones while driving is $185, and no penalty points recorded on the driver's license. Penalty points are applied against the driver for committing faults and are recorded in a database of the Road Safety Council.
