The Ministry of Culture, announced artisan Juan Olivado Camacho Leiva, as the winner of the National Culture Award Emilia Prieto Tugores .

Juan Olivado Camacho Leiva, known as Martina, was only an 11-year-old when he had to drop out of school and start working in the craft of knitting with Cabuya.

Cabuya is a thin and somewhat coarse rope that is made with palm fiber and used to tie or make handmade fabrics, such as baskets, hammocks, and rugs, among others.

When he learned about the award, Martina, now 78 years old, said that he is grateful to God for the opportunities, challenges and even the difficult experiences with which life has confronted him and today allow him to be a person who fully enjoys his trade and to share his knowledge with those who want to learn.

Matina lives in the town Tejar del Guarco* in Cartago, he is a humble man, hardworking, cheerful and with a smile that he shares with anyone willing to talk with him and listen to his stories.

He said he was very grateful and proud to be the recipient of the National Culture Award given by the Ministry of Culture.

"The day they called me from the Ministry to tell me, I could not believe it, I realized that it was real until Sonia, my sister-in-law told me it was true," Martina said. "I am a humble person, who never thought about having an acknowledgment of this type, but I know that God has each person a purpose, that is why we have to persevere in life".

The winner of the Costa Rican Culture Award said he will continue working with "the same joy, as I have always done."

The National Prize of Culture Emilia Prieto Tugores is the most important recognition granted by the Government of Costa Rica through the Ministry of Culture, to a citizen in recognition of the work of life promoting something related to Costa Rican folklore.
