Installation of bridge columns begins for $22.36 million bridge over the Virilla River

The Ministry of Public Works reports that it has begun the process of installation of the 50 meter high columns which will support the new bridge over the Virilla River*, between the town of Tibas and the province of Heredia.

The cost of the bridge is $22.36 million financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, known as CABEI.

In accordance with the progress of the construction, the ministry has also finished cleaning the river banks and has been removed approximately 50,000 cubic meters of dirt.

The new bridge, 285 meters in length, will have three lanes each of 3.60 meters wide, with sidewalks 1.5 meters wide that will be separated from the road by concrete barriers.

In addition, a barrier will be built on the sides of the pedestrian crossings to prevent people from throwing themselves into the river.

The bridge over the Rio Virilla is known to be used by people to commit suicide. The most recent case reported by the Red Cross was on May 3, when they got a 9-1-1 call about two men who were on the edge of the bridge and threatened to commit suicide.

"At the time of the arrival of the Red Cross staff, it was only possible to rescue one of the men, identified as Gustavo, the other man jumped into the Rio Virilla and died," said the Red Cross in its report.

The new bridge is scheduled to be completed in September of 2020.

The construction project is in charge of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the construction is under the control of the Costa Rican company MECO and the Spanish company Puentes y Calzada.
