Eleven places apply a prohibition for Holy Week |

According to the National Union of Local Government (UNGL), a private organization funded by the municipalities for educational and investigative purposes, eleven municipalities have applied an alcohol sale prohibition for Holy Week. The places where liquor sales are forbidden, in supermarkets, restaurants and any other public place, are: Alajuelita*, Cañas*, Alvarado*, Central Cartago*, Guarco*, Esparza*, Goicoechea*, San Isidro*, Heredia*, Union*, and Turrialba*. "Allowing or prohibiting the sale of liquors is the exclusive decision of each Municipal Council, thus reinforcing the autonomy of local governments," said Karen Porras, director of the Union of Municipalities. "In the event that the Council does not take an agreement and it is not specified in the Municipal Regulation to the Law, the liquor sale prohibition will not apply." The law has its roots in the Catholic faith, which treats Holy Thursday and Good Friday as days of meditation, fasting and penance. Businesses that do not comply with the restriction could be subject to the closure of the business or face a fine between ₡450,000 colones (about $750.15) to ₡4,460,200 colones (about $7,435). |
According to municipal police, officers could show up at supermarkets, bars and restaurants the Wednesday night of Semana Santa. At supermarkets they would make sure the alcohol displays were covered, usually with a heavy black plastic. At bars, they could put seals on the door to show no one could enter until Saturday morning. At restaurants they would put seals on the refrigerators and cabinets that held alcohol. According to Angela Lopez, manager of Mas por Menos supermarket in Guadalupe, "people usually buy more alcohol to stock up before the two-day dry law went into effect". ------------- It there a dry law during Holy Week on your own country?
