Government increases security during Holy Week |

The government has announced an increase of security for Holy Week with more primary care units, government authorities, the Red Cross and the company Globalvia Ruta 27 all improving operational and preventive actions throughout the country. The plan will actively involve the Ministry of Public Security, Tourist Police, Mounted Police, Border Police, Air Surveillance Police, Coastguard, Traffic Police, the Police of the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration, representatives of the National Emergency Commission, Firemen, the team that attends line 9-1-1 and the Red Cross. President Carlos Alvarado announced "Semana Segura" (secure week) while accompanied by the Ministers and directors of the different police and rescue organizations. "The efforts will be focused on offering, both to Costa Ricans who take advantage of these days to travel around the country, as well as tourist who visit us from other countries, all possible resources to enjoy safe environments, both on the roads, and in destinations tourism," said President Alvarado. Individual Ministry actions are planned as follows: The National Coast Guard Service will deploy its mobile, aquatic and terrestrial equipment to tourist zones. However, it will not stop carrying out its usual tasks of anti-drug fight, protection of the environment and control of fishing. The Air Surveillance Service has six aircraft available, two helicopters, a canine unit, and special operations to prevent and respond to emergencies. National Emergency Commission: in the face of a possible emergency, it has the most effective response capacity, implementing strategies ranging from the location of regulation posts and attention on the highways that connect the main cities in each province, to the reinforcement of personnel in the centers of reception of calls and dispatch of units, as well as in the emergency services. |
Border Police will increase surveillance in the main border posts with Nicaragua and Panama. Traffic Police will be executing operations aimed at the target population of high risk, (drivers under the influence of alcohol, disrespect for speed limits, users of public transport, disrespect for road demarcation, among others). In addition, it will establish permanent surveillance on national roads and in urban centers. If necessary, it will implement reversible lanes and control public transportation. Firefighters will keep extinguishing units, tankers or tank trucks active and road posts will be implemented. Emergency System 9-1-1 is being carried out by means of a state-of-the-art voice platform, with a geographical configuration that guarantees the continuity of the service 24 hours a day. The Red Cross will coordinate emergency attention from the 118 auxiliary committees throughout the national territory and will have 152 vehicles including ambulances, boats, watercraft and rescue vehicles ready. The team will maintain medical assets, emergency medical technicians, nurses, first aid assistants, specialized personnel in terrestrial and aquatic searches and rescues, logistics personnel, among others.
