No exceptions to payment of exit tax
when leaving the country, say specialists

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Experts from the Ministry of Finance, motivated the need to clarify doubts about the payment of an exit tax when leaving the country, both for foreigners and Costa Ricans, say there is no type of exception. Whether by air or land, all people must pay the tax.

"In case the trip is by land, the tax is $7," said the Ministry in its statement.

The payment of the tax can be made directly to the public transport companies or in collecting businesses authorized by the Bank of Costa Rica, which is the entity collecting this tax.

Payment can be made with a credit or debit card in the outlets of the Bank of Costa Rica, located at the land border crossing points of Paso Canoas, Sereno-Sabalito River, Tablillas, Sixaola, and Peñas Blancas.

The proceeds from the exit tax by land are distributed as follows: 50 percent to finance the cost of repairs related to the operation, conservation, and expansion of land border posts, and 50 percent to municipalities of the cantons in whose jurisdiction the terrestrial border crossings are located.

"In the case of traveling by air, the tax is $ 29," said the Ministry in its statement.

The airlines that include this tax within the cost of the ticket are: Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air France, Air Panama, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Avianca Group, British Airways, Condor, Copa Airlines, Delta Airlines, Edelweiss, Iberia, Interjet, JetBlue Airways, KLM, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, Volaris Costa Rica and Volaris Mexico.

"In the event that the airline does not include the tax in the cost of the ticket, it must be paid at the collection points of the Bank of Costa Rica, located at the Juan Santamaría*, Daniel Oduber* and Tobías Bolaños* airports," said the Ministry in its statement.

From the collection of the air exit tax $12.15 goes to the government, $12.85 to the Council of Civil Aviation, $1 for expansion of public airports and $1 to help the government with the fight against organized crime.

More information, about the payment of exit tax can be found at Ministry of Finance website: www.hacienda.go.cr
