The officials of the Ministry of Health, together with the Border Police, the Fiscal Control Police and the agents of the Medical Association, Tuesday carried out the seizure of 813 products in a store located in San José. Among the products, there were creams of 300 grams of Mariguanol, a product that is apparently made with marijuana. Mariguanol is a popular cream or ointment made with marijuana and is supposed to have healing properties that relieve the pain of rheumatism, arthritis or inflammation. The original product is manufactured by the Mexican company CBD LIFE, which has been legally sold in Mexico since 2010. The product seized yesterday could be a copy of the original. Whether it is a fake or original product, neither of them can be sold in Costa Rica. According to the police report, products that do not have sanitary registration and did not comply with the labeling requirements, have information on the ingredients, manufacturers, or country of origin were seized. Among other confiscated products were soaps, creams, ointments, perfumes and a great variety of products that mostly indicate supposed therapeutic properties. The owner of the store admitted that he himself makes many of the perfumes despite not having the necessary conditions for their preparation or the necessary permits. The officers confiscated the merchandise and an evaluation of the sales permits and commercial patents, among others, will be made to determine if the store will be closed. In relation to products for medical purposes seized by the police of the Ministry of Health, as reported in AM Costa Rica on March 22, the store that sold the product Ener-VID, used for erectile dysfunction, was closed. The Ministry of Health, through the Directorate of Regulation of Products of Sanitary Interest, was alerted about adulteration of the food supplement Ener-VID. |
Laboratory analysis found the presence of Tadalafil in the product. "This chemical is not declared on the label within the list of ingredients, nor in the documentation presented to the Ministry of Health for sanitary registration, therefore it is an adulterated product," said ministry in its statement. Specialists state that drugs containing Tadalafil are used for erectile dysfunction and are contraindicated in patients with hypertension or uncontrolled hypotension, with acute myocardial infarction, uncontrolled arrhythmias, and a history of stroke, among other disorders. Products containing Tadalafil also have numerous interactions with other medications, which can cause the occurrence of adverse reactions. It is of utmost importance that they are taken under prescription and with medical follow-up. The use of products with Tadalafil in their formulation presents a serious health risk in people who have not been previously evaluated by a doctor, since there is a certain degree of risk of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction. The presence of this compound in a product confers it the status of medication, not a supplement.
