Costa Rica’s Post Office congratulates Electric Institute with new postal stamp |
|
By
the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Correos de Costa
Rica, the official government postal
service, presented the first postage stamp
of 2019, called Energias Limpias (clean
energy) dedicated to the Costa Rican
Electricity Institute at the Central Post Office*
headquarters building in San José. The
design shows a landscape that integrates
the five renewable sources of the national
matrix.
Mauricio Rojas, general manager of Correos, said that this new stamp is a tribute to the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity. "With this new issue we pay tribute to the contribution of ICE to making the country a world leader in renewable energy." The souvenir sheet of the issue will have a face value of ₡1,470 (about $2.45) and will be on sale at the post office in Zapote, and on the web at www.correos.go. cr. Irene Cañas, executive president of the Electricity Institute, said that this issue recognizes the institute's 70-year history, "which allows Costa Rica to be a world leader in renewable electric power." The Institute reports that during the last four years, 98 percent of national electricity generation came through the use of five renewable sources. In 2017, the country reached 99.67 percent of clean production, the highest in the last 30 years. However, despite the generation of clean electric power, the Institute has increased the cost of electricity. As reported by A.M. Costa Rica on March 28, the cost of electric service is increasing by 4.82 percent. The Public Services Regulatory Authority reported that the Institute had requested an increase of 9.95 percent, but that, after they analyzed the figures presented by the Institute in terms of investments and expenses, that percentage was rejected. |
"In compliance with the law, in the process of any regular study, rigorous technical analysis was made of the estimates of income, expenses, costs, and investments that support the petition, with the purpose of ensuring compliance with the service principle, at the cost and, at the same time, harmonize the interests of consumers, users and providers," said the regulatory institution in its statement. Representatives of the Regulatory Authority also visited the Institute to verify the information provided in the request for the rate increase. "Some of the investments of the Institute were not properly justified, so those were excluded from analysis. To recognize the new rates, the costs, expenses, and investments (of the electric institute) must not be excessive," said the authority in its statement. Another change made in the rates was the calculation in colones of the rate designated to large companies, which use more than 1 million Kwh per month. Before those rates were calculated in dollars. That was affecting the company's electricity expenses, related to the increase in the dollar value. The new electricity services rate apply from yesterday, April 1, to December 31. ------------- Is your electric bill in Costa Rica more or less expensive compared to that in your own country?
