President Carlos Alvarado and directors of
the Cooperative San Carlos Electricity
(Coopelesca) inaugurated the Cooperative Solar Park*
at a cost of ₡3,877,568,303 colones (about
$6,443,015).
According to the cooperative, the Cooperative Solar Park, which covers 11.2 hectares, is located in Buenos Aires of Pocosol de San Carlos*, where 19,000 solar cells were installed to produce 5 megawatts to support 5,000 cooperative clients. The project was developed by engineers of the Cooperative and the National Consortium of Electrification Companies. President Alvarado celebrated the work the consortium has done in recent years to diversify with renewable sources such as solar energy. "The Cooperative Solar Park will be an important step to reach the goal of 2050 of photovoltaic energy will be essential to electrify transportation and reduce the use of hydrocarbons," said President Alvarado. The general manager of the cooperative, Omar Miranda, explained that in the dry season the availability of water used to generate electricity for the community decreases. |
New generation projects with renewable sources are needed to guarantee local electric service and continue reducing the purchase of electricity from the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (known as ICE). "This is a very important project for us because we are working on diversifying energy production with environmentally friendly sources," said Miranda. According to the cooperative, the advantages of the solar energy park are: an inexhaustible source of energy, it does not pollute, it avoids global warming, and it reduces the use of fossil fuels. A cooperative, or co-op, is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise. -------------
