Surgeons remove giant 1.7-kilogram tumor from 66 year old patient

Surgeons at the Calderón Guardia Hospital* in San José removed a1.7-kilogram thyroid tumor from a 66-year-old patient. The patient is the mother of 14 children.

The patient's clinical history indicates that she had suffered from thyroid problems since she was 13 years old and had been seen on multiple occasions in several hospitals by Social Security.

Because of her fear of surgery the patient refused treatment until her thyroid tumor increased to such size that her health severely deteriorated.

The patient was referred with the diagnosis of giant multinodular goiter that caused discomfort when she swallowed and respiratory distress if she exerted herself. Her condition accelerated her metabolism causing thinness.

Her health finally took her to the operating room where the goiter was finally removed in a seven hour surgery. The patient is recovering in the intensive care unit.

According to Dr. Wendy Monge, a specialist in otolaryngology, this type of case is infrequent. In most cases, where there are smaller goiters, the problem can be keep under control with medication.

Dr. Monge Aguilar said that "although the patient has a tracheotomy at this time,” the prognosis is good.

Because of her fear of surgery the patient refused treatment until her thyroid tumor increased to such size that her health severely deteriorated.

The patient continues in a process of medical follow-up and will hopefully stay in good health.
