New electric project will start operations in May |

The Electricity Institute announced on Tuesday that it will advance the integration of the Las Pailas II Geothermal Plant in Liberia in Guanacaste* into the National Electric System by one month due to the dry conditions that the country is experiencing. The incorporation will be in May and not in June, as scheduled. The immediate predecessor to the plant Las Pailas I, inaugurated in 2011. President Carlos Alvarado said of the project that "in the National De-carbonization Plan route, Las Pailas II will be an essential step to reach the goal of 2050. The energy of our volcanoes is and will be essential to electrify transport and abandon hydrocarbons." Pailas II has a state-of-the-art Japanese turbine and its cooling tower is made of fiberglass - the conventional ones are made of wood or concrete. According to the Institute, the power plant will become the first Costa Rican geothermal plant with 100 percent of its wells drilled with directional technique (not vertical).Its powerhouse will isolate the sound through a system of panels and it will operate in the middle of a recovered secondary forest. The atypical drop in rainfall during the first quarter of the year has led the Institute to increase electricity imports and use the thermal backup to meet national demand. Las Pailas II will contribute to the expansion of the firm base of daily consumption and thus decrease the use of these two resources. Geothermal energy - extracting steam from the volcanic subsoil to generate electricity - is the only known renewable source that does not depend on weather conditions. This feature allows it to be a firm, reliable and long-lasting resource, 24 hours a day, and every day of the year. The Institute reports that the development of geothermal energy in Costa Rica has allowed the forest recovery of about 1,400 hectares of land previously dedicated to livestock and agriculture in the province of Guanacaste, the driest region of the nation. |

According to the Institute, it is a world leader in the efficient and sustainable use of geothermal energy. It has the third installed capacity in the continent -only surpassed by Mexico and the United States- and is part of a small group of producing countries, along with others such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Italy, Iceland, Kenya, and Turkey. The electrical project Las Pailas II began construction in April 2013. It is the seventh geothermal in Costa Rica, has an installed capacity of 55 megawatts, and 21 wells were drilled with the directional technique. The average depth of the wells is 2,200 meters and pipes cover 13,88 kilometers. ------------- Should the cost of electricity decrease with the start-up of this geothermal electricity project?
