Cases of chronic kidney diseases increased
by 83 percent in two years, say doctors

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

According to the most recent report from the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance of Social Security, there has been an increase in the rate of chronic kidney diseases.

In 2016, 133.28 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants were registered, but in 2018 the registered cases rose to 244.6 per one hundred thousand inhabitants. This amounts to an increase of 83 percent in cases detected in two years.

The provinces that registered more cases of this disease were Guanacaste*, Limón*, Puntarenas*, and Alajuela*.

In addition, there was an increase in the number of patients who require a medical procedure called ambulatory chronic peritoneal dialysis. In 2011, there were a total of 132 patients receiving this treatment but in 2018, 665 patients were registered, or four times more cases in seven years.

A second type of treatment for kidney disease, hemodialysis, also increased.  In 2011, 137 patients were treated with hemodialysis. Eight years later, in 2018, 219 patients were treated an increase of 59 percent.

Román Macaya, president of Social Security, said "the growth of chronic kidney diseases forces the institution to make a call to the population to adopt healthy habits to prevent this disease."

Dr. Roy Wong McClure, epidemiologist of Social Security, added "we have to make a call to the population to stop all the risk factors that contribute to raising that illness, among them: diabetes, hypertension, self-medication, dehydration, and heat shock."

The specialists said that climate change could have an impact on the presentation of this disease since it heat affects the function of the kidneys.

Specialist recommendations to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are to must keep their conditions under control with constant physical activity, an adequate diet and taking their medications as prescribed by doctors.

To improve patient care, Social Security is providing care services for this disease in hospitals located in the regions with high rate on this disease.
