Costa Rica and Peru establish partnership to increase water sources in Guanacaste |

The Ministry of the Environment is developing plans called "South-South Cooperation" and the "2017-2019 Plan." The plans are two year programs that will have funds of up to 600 million colones (about $ 989,000) to recover the water sources that are created with rainwater and runoff through the forest until they flow into the Cañas River in Guanacaste*. Pamela Castillo, interim Minister of the Environment, said, "this program was born as a measure of adaptation to climate change and will be implemented in the lower and middle river basin of the Cañas River in Guanacaste. The initiative aims to recover water for both human consumption and irrigation." This plan will be financed by the EUROCLIMA + Program of the European Union. The alliance will be led by the Peruvian organization known as AIDER and the Costa Rican organization known as FONAFIFO, and will involve the training of the indigenous and country population of both countries, said the ministry. With the support of the Ministry of Environment of Costa Rica and the Ministry of Agriculture Peru, those programs will be developed by both countries to allow an exchange of technologies for the creation of water sources and the management of water resources from the forest. The goal of these plans is the transfer of successful practices and experiences between both countries. In the case of Costa Rica, it is learning the creation of new water sources. In the case of Peru, it is learning how Costa Rica develops eco-systemic services. |
