Customs controls are weak, said director |

The General Customs director, Juan Carlos Gómez, was at the hearing before the Special Permanent Commission of Income and Public Expenditure in the Legislative Assembly where he said that the controls in the different customs offices of the country are weak and have a delay of 15 years. Director Gomez answered the questions of the deputies about the state of the customs in the country and about who is responsible for not putting the two scanners donated by the government of China into operation. Director Gomez said that despite having started in his position in January, he does not ignore the issue of customs, and he was clear that customs controls have a delay about 15 years. "The controls are not effective, and we have to program the scanners since they are a tool for a diagnostic of the control of goods," said the director. In regard to the problems in general customs, deputy Franggi Nicolás mentioned a diagnosis made by the General Comptroller who said that the customs administration does not make crossed controls between the General Directorate of Administration and the General Directorate of Customs. According to director Gómez, these two areas are practically performing the same function and they are working to unite those departments. In addition, director Gomez said that an antenna system will be installed to monitor containers at both control post, in Peñas Blancas* located on the northern border with Nicaragua, and the Paso Canoas* customs office located on the southern border with Panama. |

Director Gomez added, “the issues of customs and evasion is never-ending subject, because the system used in the customs, known as " Tica," is a computer system that does not meet the expectations of a good system that provides security in customs." He continued by saying that there is corruption in customs, "you have to control all the customs there is corruption in the centers but not only the officials." ------ What should the government do to prevent corruption in customs?
