U.S. Embassy promotes ‘Women
and Technology’ program

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The U.S. Embassy is promoting technological workshops aimed at women between 15 and 20 years from vulnerable areas, to encourage in this population’s interest in scientific areas.

The initiative called "Women and Technology" is being promoted by the U.S. Embassy and developed by the Omar Dengo Foundation, to training young women in science, technology, engineering, arts, design, and mathematics.

To Sharon Day, U. S. ambassador, "the future of the economy and innovation in Costa Rica requires the participation of young women and programs such as Women and Technology to have those skills that will allow them to be successful and solve the challenges of innovative way, create products and even improve health care."

The first of these workshops is being held in San José where a group of 25 young women will learn about electricity principles in everyday tasks and can design their own electrical devices.

In the coming months, the training will be in Guanacaste, the north zone, the south zone, and Limón, in thematic areas of sciences, computers, physics, design, programming, and robotics.

According to the Foundation, at the workshops students can develop strategic thinking and begin to understand how technological and scientific products are created.

They can also see how the role of people is evolving and how their creative power is important in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The goal is to increase interest in technical or academic vocations in these areas that are most in demand in the country but are not necessarily preferred by young women.

According to statistics from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 2015, only 30 percent of the total graduates in Costa Rica in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics were women.

That percentage was reduced to 24 percent of the total number of graduates from information and communication technology courses.

For more information on this special training call Omar Dengo Foundation phone number: 2527-6000 or 2527-6001
