Green Climate Fund donated over
$2.6 million to Costa Rica

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The government announced that the Green Climate Fund has donated ¢1,637 million colones (about $2,687,307) to finance projects aimed at reducing the effects of climate change throughout the country.

The Green Climate Fund is a foundation established within the framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. It is the financial operating entity that assists developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change. The Fund is based in Incheon, South Korea.

The announcement was by first lady Claudia Dobles, who said that 20 municipalities were selected because of their vulnerability to extreme events generated by floods or droughts.

The first lady announced the donation during the Private Climate Investment Conference, in which she participated in October 2018 in the Korean city of Songdo.

An official from the Ministry of the Environment said that the new resources will be focused on regulatory planning, regional planning and risk analysis in each canton.

The administration and execution of the donation will be in charge of several public institutions including the Ministry of Environment and the National Commission of Emergencies. These institutions will also receive technical support for three years from UN Environment.

The first lady said that the selection of the 20 municipalities was made after a multi-criteria analysis. Socioeconomic indicators, biophysical indicators, the state of the regulatory plans, were examined until a final list with urban, coastal and rural cantons was obtained.

The twenty municipalities that will participate in the donation are in Parrita*, Montes de Oro*, Puntarenas*, Talamanca*, Siquirres*, Matina*, Pococí*, Nicoya*, La Cruz*, Cañas*, Alajuelita*, Acosta*, Naranjo*, Turrialba*, Guatuso*, Upala*, Los Chiles*, Buenos Aires*, Corredores* and Osa*.

According to UN Environment statistics:

    * From 1880 to 2012, the average global temperature increased by 0.85 ° C.

    * Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished and sea level has risen. From 1901 to 2010, the global average sea level rose by 19 cm as oceans expanded. The Arctic's ice extent has shrunk in every successive decade since 1979.

    * Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by almost 50 percent since 1990.

    * Emissions grew more quickly between 2000 and 2010.
