Institute of Tourism will make new statistical
indicator to count tourists arriving in Costa Rica

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute will design a new indicator to measure the arrival of tourists into the country.

To create this new index, the institute signed an agreement with the General Directorate of Migration. The agreement will allow a higher level of information on the monthly travel of people in Costa Rica.

Since 1958, tourism activity has been estimated through an indicator that it is the sum of the number of international arrivals per port of entry, said the institute.

This monthly, semi-annual and annual calculation was based on a table of information that each month provided data on migration and that historically has been added by country with three reference variables: month of arrival, nationality and immigration control post (air, land and sea).

The Immigration Office has begun to share new variables on the migratory status that the person holds when entering Costa Rica with the Institute.

The new information now opens the possibility for the institution to calculate or estimate indicators that have not been available for the country.

María Amalia Revelo, Minister of Tourism, said that this is an opportunity for methodological data gathering that can be used to build a new indicator consistent with the international quality standards.

"Given the volume of information that the Migration Office exchanges with the Institute after signing the cooperation agreement, we face the responsibility of improving the quality of tourism statistics, taking advantage of the facilities offered by technological changes for the access and processing of big data," said Revelo.

The Minister added that members of the private tourism sector have requested that the government fine tune the periodic monitoring of tourism activity in Costa Rica.

According to the Institute the tourism industry’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country increased from 4.4 percent in 2012 to 6.3 percent in 2016. This is equivalent to 8.2 percent of GDP.

In 2018, the institute registered 3,016,667 tourist.

In 2018, the institute registered 3,016,667 tourist arrivals by all routes, an increase of 1.9 percent in relation to the year 2017. This flow of tourists is about equal to 60 percent of the total of Costa Rican population.

The most important entry points in the country are the two international airports, Juan Santamaría* and Daniel Oduber* with a total of 2,314,888 arrivals.

This is equivalent to an increase of 5.9 percent in the Juan Santamariá Airport and a 5.1 percent increase in the Daniel Oduber Airport.

There was, however, a decrease of 8.9 percent in the arrival of people by land. The institution attributes this decline to the political conflict in the neighboring Nicaragua.
